Choosing A-level Biology?  Queens Park Community School is an excellent opportunity for students aiming for undergraduate courses in biotechnology, dentistry, medicine and other related fields of study. Our results are good with many students gaining admission to prestigious Russell Group institutions.

This course is popular at our Sixth Form. Our dedicated teachers are subject specialists, providing expert guidance and support throughout the learning process. In addition to excellent academic instruction, students benefit from valuable opportunities such as visiting a field centre which forms an important part of the course. All A level biologists are also encouraged to join and coordinate the dissection club which gives them hand on experience in extending their learning as well as gaining valuable skills and knowledge to thrive in their future careers.

Year 13 taught topics

Topic 5 = energy for biological processes

Topic 7 = modern genetics

Topic 8 = origins of genetic variation

Topic 9 = control systems

How will I be assessed?

At the end of Year 13 you will be assessed by three examinations papers:

Paper 1: Advanced Biochemistry, Microbiology and Genetics
This exam covers all the topics from year 12 and Year 13 topics 5, 6 & 7 (listed above). It is a 1hr 45min exam and contributes 30% towards the final grade.

Paper 2: Advanced Physiology, Evolution and Ecology
This exam covers the year 12 topics and topics 8, 9 & 10 (listed above). It is a 1hr 45min exam and contributes 30% towards the final grade.

Paper 3: General and Practical Principles in Biology
This is examined through a synoptic paper that may draw upon questions on any of the topics in the A Level Biology but there is a focus on the core practicals. It is a 2hr 30min exam and contributes 40% towards the final grade.

Science Practical Endorsement

This qualification will allow students to use apparatus and techniques to develop practical skills. The Endorsement will not contribute to the overall grade for this qualification, but will be recorded on the student’s certificate.

Where might it lead?

A Level Biology can lead to a variety of university courses, including: Biology, Sports Science, Medicine, Nursing, Health Studies, Dietetics, Psychology, Social Care, Environmental Studies and Pharmacology.
