NATIONAL YEAR OF READING 2026
2026 has been named the National Year of Reading, a nationwide call to reconnect with reading as a meaningful, modern and social part of everyday life, and reverse the decline in reading for pleasure.
Here’s a powerful truth that always stops us in our tracks:
Reading for pleasure is the single biggest predictor of a child’s future success, more than family background, income or parents’ qualifications.
If we want our young people to thrive, one of the most valuable things we can do is encourage them to read because they want to, not because they have to.
What You Can Do at Home
The simplest actions are often the most powerful:
- Let your teenager see you reading
- Talk about what you’re reading
- Share why you’re enjoying it
- Ask them about their current book
These everyday moments transform reading from a school task into something chosen and enjoyed.
Even with teenagers, your influence is stronger than you might think.
Our Commitment at QPCS
At QPCS Library, we are passionate about placing the right books into the right hands.
We strive to guide students towards stories and ideas that will challenge, inspire and resonate with them. Every day, we see how the right book at the right time can:
- Spark imagination
- Build empathy
- Strengthen confidence
- Help young people understand themselves and the world around them
Together, we can make this the year every child gets to experience the genuine joy of reading.
