The Curriculum Extension Group

The Curriculum Extension Group has met this term. We are currently working to support the terrific First Story scheme - a writing workshop for students, mainly in the younger years, that meets after school, and produces an anthology of students' work every year - which is running for the third time. We are also hoping to raise money to employ a writer in future years to keep the scheme going. If anyone has any ideas on places/organisations to apply, please let me know. CEG members try to provide interesting speakers for the sixth form, and particular areas of the curriculum.

Currently, we are assembling a list of names of professionals/parents who work in a range of areas - from health work; media; science and law - to provide insight into their areas of work, for students, and give career advice.

Please e-mail me, Melissa Benn at the PTFA, if you want to join our friendly group. At the moment we meet about once a term.

QPCS hosts anthology of students’ work......

In 2011 QPCS publicity group hosted a book launch at the school. Novelist Ben Faccini has been meeting weekly with a group of students in the lower school to work on their creative writing, be it poetry or prose. The students produced an anthology of their work called ‘Look Back’ which was launched at the school with a special reading in the main hall followed by a reception in the Quiet Space.

Ben’s work is part of the First Story scheme - a charitable venture that brings writers to work directly with students in secondary schools - and this is the second year that QPCS has had the benefit of a writer-in-residence in this way. It’s an incredible luxury, very exciting for the students, and for all of us.

The scheme is part of the ongoing work of the school’s publicity group, run by a group of parents who liaise closely with the school to bring in exciting writers, and speakers in general, to QPCS. Over the years we have had a range of novelists, poets, journalists, politicians, script writers, actors and many others come and talk to, and work with, QPCS students.

All parents are welcome to join the group. We meet every term for an hour or so. The meetings are relaxed and informal and we would love to have new members. If you are interested please e-mail me, Melissa Benn (I am a parent, with 2 children at QPCS) at ptfa@qpcs.brent.sch.uk
